Additionally, the report stated that people are supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives, and staff supports the individuals in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests.

The staff enabled people to broaden their horizons and develop new interests and friends. At Leaf Complex Care Exeter, they encourage people to be more engaged with their community, to enjoy people’s company and see them as individuals.

For example, one staff member was part of the “speedway community”, and this individual frequently went to races. They had special ‘shoutouts’ and had become well-known and friendly faces in that community.

The support Leaf Complex Care Exeter provides is person-centred and promotes people’s dignity, privacy and human rights; Staff relationships with people were caring and supportive. The staff provided care that was kind and compassionate. The value concept of ‘family’ saw people, staff and families working as a team.

What’s interesting to know is that the care files are extremely personalised to reflect people’s specific preferences. Their views and suggestions are taken into consideration to improve the service.

Therefore, people are kept safe from avoidable harm because the staff knows them well and understands how to protect them from abuse. The service worked well with other agencies to do so.
